Grade 409 stainless steel is a Ferritic steel that offers good mechanical properties and high-temperature corrosion resistance. It is commonly considered as a chromium stainless steel, with applications in exhaust systems of automobiles and applications that demand weldability.
Common grades of ferritic stainless steel include 409 and 430 grades. Duplex. This family includes many of the most recent and proprietary alloys created. Many duplex grades offer a combination of properties from both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels.

Austenitic grades are the most commonly used stainless steels accounting for more than 70% of production (type 304 is the most commonly specified grade by far). They are not hardenable by heat treatment. Duplex stainless steels hold relatively high chromium levels (between 18 and 28%) and moderate amounts of nickel (between 4.5 and 8%).
Most watches that are made of stainless steel are made of this grade. Rolex is an exception in that they use Type 904L. 18/10 stainless often corresponds to this grade. Also referred to as "A4" in accordance with International Organization for Standardization ISO 3506.
Ferritic Stainless Steels . These are plain chromium (10.5 to 18%) grades such as Grade 430 and 409. Their moderate corrosion resistance and poor fabrication properties are improved in the higher alloyed grades such as Grades 434 and 444 and in the proprietary grade 3CR12.
Ferritic stainless steels such as grade 430 or grade 439 are also readily weldable, as are Duplex stainless steels. Martensitic stainless are generally not suitable for welding, however, some martensitic stainless steel grades with lower amounts of carbon can be welded.
